I am sensitive to the emotional response I have to the beauty of nature and the energy of light, color, transparency, and shadows. I love to seek out the momentary heightened state of awareness. In my work I paint reality and dreams, metaphors and poetic feelings.

My story as an artist began in art school, but my awareness of nature and what artistic statement I wanted to say began in my thirties when I had one of the most intense and life changing experiences of my life. It was the three years that I spent suffering though a mysterious condition called “environmental illness”. A massive remodel of my home and art studio had given me a toxic overload, and I became allergic to every major food group and almost every chemical. It turns out that I was like one of those canaries in the mines, sensitive to the substances that most people don’t react to, but may eventually get cancer from.

After spending one year seeing every kind of doctor imaginable to try and cure chronic muscle pain and headaches, I found a wholistic doctor who tested me for allergies and told me I was a “universal reactor”. To cure myself I had to detox my body by ridding my environment of synthetics, chemicals, oil based paints, and undergo sauna therapy, sweating out toxins for a month straight. I also only ate only organic meat, and organic vegetables.

I spent my time in isolation from the public, because even perfume was enough to put me in pain. My children were young and went along with all the changes we made, like a six month stay in the mountains in an all natural cabin.I began to paint in only watercolors and for the next fifteen years watercolor was my medium of choice. I became a master watercolorist and was chosen to be in several national watercolor books . My painting was on the cover of “Keys to Painting Textures and Surfaces” by North Light Publishers. In 2010 my work, “Sunflowers and Coffee”, won the American Artist magazine cover contest for watercolor.

The white of the paper showing through the thin washes of watercolor was the perfect vehicle to render glass bottles and flowers with the sunlight shining through. I became fascinated with still life subjects because they were easy to place in compositions where the sunlight was glowing and captivating me with its energy. Eventually I branched out to painting landscapes and tropical flowers, responding to the feelings I had surrounded by nature on family trips to Hawaii.

I continue to be captivated by light, and plan to continue to seek new and exciting ways to express the beauty of light . I have found a full recovery from my allergic reactions, and can permit myself to paint in oils. However I must remain careful to never expose myself to needless toxins in my food or environment. My experience with environmental illness educated me about organic and healthy living, but also helped me find an inner strength and confidence. Most of all, it gave me an appreciation for nature and the rules of the natural world .

American Art Collector Magazine, June 2011

American Art Collector Magazine, Jan 2011 I am featured in the January issue 2011 of American Art Collector Magazine. the article is titled: "Everlasting Objects: Still Life Art Today". One of her main objectives is to create dramatic lighting for interest and to set the mood of each painting. her works usually have a mood of celebration or curious whimsy, but they always have a fascination with light.

She has traditionally painted floral arrangements set up in front of a window where the flowers and objects were bathed in light, and glass vases and petals were backlit by the sunlight pouring in from the outside. Some of her other paintings are void of flowers and consist mainly of transparent objects such as glass bottles and plastic triangles set up where the sunlight produces long dramatic shadows and many reflections.

First Place in the American Artist Watercolor Cover Competition

Sunflowers and Coffee, 30" x 40"

Look for the summer edition of "Watercolor Magazine" 2010. I find it very interesting since he has really done his research and describes the art world in France in detail. These were the days when the Salon was an annual event held at the Palais des Champs-Elysees. It featured thousands of works of art chosen by the Selection Committee. In some years as many as a million people visited the Salon during its six week run, with the crowds averaging 23,000 a day. I guess fine art reigned supreme before the days of movies and television.
He describes the artwork of Manet in detail and the artist Meissonier, who loved to paint battle scenes and was a very succesful painter. I found it very interesting to hear about the criticism which was given to some of the masters who we revere in art history. Vicious reviews were all too frequent. Ingres attracted some hateful notices about "Grande Odalisque". The critics said that the reclining woman had three vertebrae too many. Ingres commented that his work had become "prey for ravenous dogs." Fifteen years later, when his painting "Martyrdom of Saint-Symphorian" was attacked fiercely he shut his studio, left Paris for seven years, and for more than twenty years refused to exhibit at the Salon.
Reading about these artists' stuggles gave me some satisfaction in a way. It's not easy to hear criticism about your own work or to be rejected from an exhibition which you really want to be in. But when I read about greats such as Manet and Ingres being criticised, it makes me realize that it is all part of the artmaking process and no matter how good a painter one is, there will always be someone who will want to find fault, or will prefer another painting over yours. The main thing is to not let it get you down, but to keep painting.

Showing in "Eternal Light" at the Blinn House

I will be showing "Stargazers' Afternoon", a 30" x 40" oil painting, at the California Art Club show, Eternal Light. Here I am with Daniel Greene, the judge of the awards. The next morning he was available to give critiques to any of the artists in the show who were there. He has a keen eye for spotting what isn't working in a painting and what could be handled better. The critique was insightful and I learned some things regarding my own painting as well as from listening to the other critiques.
Greenhouse gallery is a large and beautiful gallery in San Antonio.
